Loca Luna | TAPAS RESTAURANT W/ LIVE MUSIC & DANCING

March 4, 2019

If you are ever on the hunt for live music, an eclectic mix of tapas, and complimentary salsa lessons (8-9pm on Wednesdays), then Loca Luna is the perfect spot for you!

I must admit that I honestly had no expectations when it came to Loca Luna's dinner menu since their cocktails and live music boasts to be the main attraction, but after sampling a few of their tapas, my mind was completely changed! They offer some reasonably priced and delicious options that would keep anyone coming back for more...

GAMBAS AL AJILLO

- Sautéed shrimp, fresh garlic butter & grilled bread
- The shrimp were cooked to perfection and I was happy to discover the garlic butter did not overpower the dish.

CHIPOTLE MASHED POTATOES (side dish)

- My first thought when I tried the chipotle mashed potatoes was, "Oh, that's interesting." You can definitely taste the seasoning, I just wish it were a bit creamier since it is still supposed to be mashed potatoes. It ate a bit heavy and slightly dry for me, but worked well when paired with sauces from other tapas I ordered.

CALAMARES FRITOS

- Flash fried calamari,  Spanish paprika & pico de gallo
- I love me some calamari so I find it hard to resist whenever I see it on a menu. Loca Luna's calamari has hit a home run for me in the past, but on this particular night I found it to be a bit overdone and over-salted. But the pico definitely helped to cut down on some of that saltiness.

PORK BELLY TACOS

- 2 fried pork belly tacos, pineapple salsa & pickled onions
- If you've ever had pork belly, you know it can be quite bland, so the pineapple salsa and pickled onions in this dish were a definite win for me! It added texture, a touch of sweetness, and the vinegar from the pickled onions worked well to balance the flavours of the salsa. I must admit, I have developed an allergy to fresh pineapple, so I did have to take some medicine incase of a reaction, but it was well worth it!

MUSSELS Y CLAMS

- Steamed mussels & clams, guajillo lobster broth, roma tomato & grilled bread
- I think this tapa was probably the most disappointing of the night because the mussels and clams did not seem to be cleaned properly. It was super gritty- something that always makes me hesitant to order mollusk dishes, which immediately ruins a dish for me. The broth on the other hand was in fact delicious and paired well with the chipotle mashed potatoes.

FLAN de QUESO

- Rich vanilla egg custard, caramel & berries
- The dessert was probably my favourite part of the meal! Loca Luna makes an exceptional flan, unlike any I have ever tried before. If you are familiar with the consistency of a traditional flan, this one is much different; it ate more similarly to a cheesecake in my opinion. The last time I had their Flan de Queso it seemed must lighter and airy, but this time around it was much denser. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it (but if I had to choose, I much preferred it the first time around!).
